Holohoméopathie, organic farming, biodynamics: what are the differences for the vineyard?

AB label, Demeter certification, Holohoméopathie: three approaches to organic farming that are often confused. This honest comparison explains what each one actually guarantees for the vineyard — and what it does not guarantee — as seen from our vineyards in Grande Champagne.

The essentials in 30 seconds

  • The AB label prohibits synthetic inputs, but permits certain natural treatments such as copper and sulphur.
  • Biodynamic farming incorporates an understanding of cosmic rhythms and dynamised preparations, under Demeter certification.
  • Holohoméopathie traite le système entier de la vigne plutôt que les symptômes individuels, en s'appuyant sur l'infiniment petit.
  • None of these approaches is superior: they are three ways of respecting life.

The organic (AB) label: what it really guarantees

The AB label, monitored in France by organisations such as Ecocert, is based on a precise set of specifications. Its primary rule: no synthetic inputs. Chemical fertilisers, herbicides and synthetic pesticides are banned from the vineyard plot.

This is a genuine and demanding commitment. Converting a vineyard to organic farming takes several years, during which the soil relearns to thrive without chemical support.

But there is a common misconception that needs to be gently dispelled: organic does not mean zero treatment. The specifications allow products of natural origin to protect the vines from downy mildew and powdery mildew. These include copper, often in the form of Bordeaux mixture, and sulphur.

These substances are natural, but they are still treatments applied to the plant. Copper, in particular, accumulates in the soil and is subject to regulated limits. Understanding this means reading the labels with a clear head rather than harbouring illusions. To delve deeper into the traces of these treatments, we explore elsewhere the issue of residues right down to the glass.

The AB label therefore guarantees viticulture free from synthetic inputs, which is monitored and certified. It does not promise a vineyard entirely free from all treatments. It is a solid foundation upon which other approaches can be built.

Biodynamics: when the celestial calendar enters the vineyard

Biodynamics builds on the organic foundation and adds a vision of the estate as a living organism in its own right. It draws its principles from Rudolf Steiner’s agricultural lectures, delivered in 1924, and is now certified under the Demeter label.

Its first distinctive feature relates to time. The biodynamic winegrower observes cosmic rhythms and lunar cycles to choose the right moment for any intervention. Pruning, working the soil or bottling are carried out in harmony with the celestial calendar.

Its second distinctive feature lies in the biodynamic preparations. The best known, preparation 500, or horn manure, is buried in winter and then dynamised in water before being sprayed onto the soil. The aim is to stimulate microbial life and root development.

This process of energisation – this long, rhythmic stirring of the water – resonates with concepts we hold dear. It speaks to the infinitely small and to the memory of water. Biodynamics demands rigour, patience and a daily connection with living things. We regard it with deep respect: for many, it has reopened the door to a sensitive approach to viticulture.

Holohoméopathie: treating the system, not the symptom

La Holohoméopathie prend ce chemin d'un pas de plus. Formulée à partir des principes de l'homéopathie agricole, elle les applique non à un individu, mais à un écosystème entier : le Holon, l'âme vivante du lieu.

It operates on the basis of the law of similars and potentised dilution. Rather than combating a pest, the aim is to strengthen the plant’s overall resilience and the richness of the soil microbiota. We treat the system, not just the symptom.

This is Holohoméopathie: a holistic and vibrational view of living organisms that we have embraced. It is neither at odds with organic nor biodynamic farming: it follows in their footsteps, using the infinitely small as a tool and human intention as a guide.

We do not set out to explain the entire method here. If the subject interests you, we have measured and described this dialogue between the vine and the elixir in fractal dimension 1.86, as measured on Arachnéa. Remember the key point: whilst organic farming removes certain elements and biodynamics works in harmony with natural rhythms, Holohoméopathie seeks to awaken the living organism’s own defences.

The comparative table: three approaches side by side

To get a clear picture, nothing beats a side-by-side comparison. The table below summarises what each approach actually does in the vineyard, from authorised inputs right through to what might change in the glass.

Criterion Organic certification (AB) Biodynamics (Demeter) Holohoméopathie
Permitted inputs No synthetic substances; copper and sulphur permitted Organic base + dynamised preparations Potentised dilutions, targeted herbal medicine
Certification AB / Ecocert Demeter No official certification to date
Philosophy Eliminating synthetic chemicals The estate as a living organism Treating the system, not the symptom
Relationship with time Agronomic calendar Cosmic and lunar rhythms Continuous monitoring of balance
What this means for the vineyard Soil free from synthetic residues Microbial life and root development stimulated Resilience and microbiota strengthened from within

Each column reflects a different intention, and all converge towards the same goal: fewer inputs, more life. Would you like to understand our approach in detail? Discover our method in detail.

What this means for our vineyards in Genté

Here in Genté, these principles aren’t just theory. They’re part of our daily routine, practised on our limestone vineyards in Genté, in the Grande Champagne region.

When Virgile and I took over these plots, the first thing we did was look at the soil. A living soil cannot be commanded: it must be earned, season after season. From the moment we took over these plots, we chose a cultivation method that respects life, at the heart of which Holohoméopathie now lies.

In practical terms, we apply Holohoméopathiques préparations en harmonie avec les cycles naturels de la plante. L’objectif n’est jamais de forcer, mais de écouter. Une vigne qui se défend seule nécessite moins de notre part.

This approach is in line with our manifesto: ‘fewer inputs, fewer intrusions’. It guides every decision, from pruning to distillation. For what the vine receives, the grape retains, and the glass, one day, reveals.

FAQ — your questions on organic, biodynamic and Holohoméopathie winemaking

What is the difference between an organic wine and a biodynamic wine?

An organic wine is made from grapes grown without synthetic inputs, under the AB label. A biodynamic wine adheres to this foundation, whilst also incorporating dynamised preparations and taking cosmic rhythms into account, under Demeter certification. Biodynamics is therefore an additional set of requirements that encompasses organic farming.

Does the AB label guarantee that the wine is free from pesticides?

No. The AB label prohibits synthetic pesticides, but permits certain treatments of natural origin, such as copper and sulphur, to protect the vines. It guarantees the absence of synthetic chemicals, not the total absence of any treatment applied to the plant.

Is biodynamics scientifically proven?

This question calls for honesty. The overall effects of synthetic-free viticulture on the soil are well documented, but the specific mechanism of certain dynamised preparations remains a subject of debate within the scientific community. Many winegrowers observe the benefits on a daily basis, without claiming to explain everything.

How does Holohoméopathie apply to the vineyard?

It treats the vineyard as a whole organism, the Holon. Using dynamised dilutions and the law of similars, it seeks to strengthen the plant’s resilience and soil life, rather than to eliminate a pest. We support the defences of living organisms rather than replacing them.

No hierarchy, just different paths

Organic, biodynamic, Holohoméopathie: not a hierarchy where one surpasses the other, but three paths leading to the same horizon – that of a respected land. Organic farming removes, biodynamic farming supports, Holohoméopathie awakens.

We have chosen the latter path, without dismissing the others. If this quest resonates with you, join the waiting list for our first elixir and follow, with us, the reawakening of life.
